About the Conference

Welcome to the website of the First  International Garifuna Conference  to be held at the Peace Memorial Hall, Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines from 10th to 13th March 2012.

The Conference will address a range of critically important issues in the various fields that impact on the Garifuna Heritage and Culture  today. Our Keynote Speaker and Presenters will include distinguished faculty from major academic Institutions who have  conducted significant research on various aspects of the Garifuna Heritage and culture  as well as films, art and culture presentations and exhibitions from artists inspired by  Garifuna themes.

Participants are invited to submit an Abstract for a paper presentation .  Film and Documentary submissions are also invited.

Conference Schedule

With regard to Scheduling, please note that the Conference will commence on Saturday, March, 10th, 2012 with a  Pilgrimage to the  Historic Island of Balliceaux, where over 1,000 Garifunas were kept prior to being sent to Central America.

The actual Conference will take place from Sunday, March 11th ,  –  Monday, March 12th, 2012. Participants are invited to extend their stay to March 14th to participate in the  Official observance of National Heroes Day, March 14th – the Anniversary of the Date of the Death of Joseph Chatoyer the leader of the Garifuna Resistance Movement .
