Cultural  Survival, Youth and Opportunities in Heritage Tourism ”

CALL FOR PAPERS

In each of the countries where Garifuna reside the Garifuna Heritage and culture offers unique challenges and opportunities. This Culture has become one of the more important symbols of resistance in the Caribbean and in 2001 UNESCO proclaimed it as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.  The Garinagu are also represented in and supported by the 2007 United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and form part of that Indigenous struggle as well as the struggle of people of African Descent.

The Garifuna Story, indeed, the continued survival of the Garifuna along with our heritage and culture in the historical context of attempted genocide from a larger, more well equipped power been hailed as a source of wonder and amazement.  As a unique hybrid culture, it captures the African as well as the Kalinago experience forged together through the crucible of colonial expansionism.  It has, as it were, all the powerful elements of drama and melodrama, yet it has still not been fully examined, absorbed and utilized in the promotion of the Interests of the Indigenous people and the countries in which we reside.

For the countries where the Garifuna story is still being played out – Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Diaspora in the United States of America –  there is clearly value in the rich legacy embedded in such a history.  For the rest of the Caribbean, the Garifuna story also represents a significant supporting theme for their own courageous heroes and sheroes whose resistance carved out an indelible place in their rich history and marked the resistant nature of the Caribbean spirit.

For all of us in the Caribbean there are many opportunities which can and should be explored which arise from the ownership and development of the Garifuna story.  In particular, there is an urgent need to target the youth and energise them to lead the movement forward into the future with the requisite passion and collective vision to develop themselves and their communities.

In the context of the Global Economy and the Forces aligned to standardize and package our Tourist Product for export, there are many challenges in all our countries which must be addressed in relation to the development of Heritage Tourism.  What constitutes the major elements of our Caribbean Heritage Tourism Product? Is there a competitive advantage offered in Heritage Tourism by the Garifuna and Kalinago Heritage and Culture and if so how can it be of greater benefit to the Indigenous communities?

The Garifuna Heritage Foundation Inc. In collaboration with the UWI Open Campus will be hosting our Sixth International Garifuna Conference in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines from March 11th – 14th, 2019.   The First International Conference was held in March 2012 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and resulted in the Yurumei Declaration which specifically made a call for Reparations for the Garifuna people.  This Sixth Conference will be enhanced by an Exhibition, Film Series, Food, Dance , Traditional Medicine and Music fest  to be held simultaneously.
